Introduction

This section introduces the hint feature in our framework, which assists in guiding the model during Capture the Flag (CTF) challenges. The hint feature enhances the agent's ability to understand the context and scenario of the challenge, improving its efficiency in solving tasks. By passing hints during runtime, users can steer the model towards specific techniques, vulnerabilities, or strategies that are critical for solving particular challenges.

Hint Feature Overview

The hint feature can be enabled via the configuration file, allowing users to pass hints to the agent dynamically. These hints help the agent focus on key aspects of the CTF challenge, leading to improved performance and a deeper understanding of the context. The configuration file setup is described in detail here.

Steps to Enable the Hint Feature

To activate the hint feature within the framework, follow these steps:

  • Create a Hint Directory:

    • In the base directory of your project, create a folder named hints. This will serve as the repository for all hint files that you want to provide to the agent.
  • Prepare Hint Files:

    • Write your hints in Markdown (MD) format. This allows for structured and readable hints. Each hint should focus on key guidance related to the CTF challenge (e.g., tips on exploitation, reverse engineering, or network analysis).
    • Save the Markdown files in the newly created hints folder.
  • Add Hint Files to the Configuration:

    • Once you have your hint files, include their paths in the configuration file (base_config.yaml) under the demonstration section. This tells the agent where to find and use the hints during runtime.
  • Run the Agent:

    • After setting up the hints and updating the configuration file, run the agent. The agent will automatically reference your hints and display them in the hint prompt while running the CTF challenges.

Example: Using the Hint Feature for a Pwn Challenge

To demonstrate the power of the hint feature, let's walk through a practical example. Suppose you are guiding the agent to solve a binary exploitation (Pwn) challenge.

Step 1: Creating a Hint File

Create a hint document named pwn_hint.md in the hints folder. The content of this file may look something like this:

- Understand the Binary Structure
    - Focus on Functions: Start by identifying key functions that involve user input, such as `gets()`, `scanf()`, or custom input-handling functions. Extract function names using `nm` or `objdump`.
    - Simple Static Analysis: Parse the binary’s assembly using `objdump` or `radare2` to identify vulnerable patterns, especially those lacking input validation.
    - Memory Layout and Registers: Understand how functions interact with the stack and registers, focusing on return addresses and saved frame pointers.

- Use Binary Protection Information
    - Check Security Features: Use `checksec` to gather binary protection details (NX, ASLR, etc.).
    - If NX is disabled, consider shellcode injection. Otherwise, prioritize Return-Oriented Programming (ROP) chains or return-to-libc attacks.
    - Address Leak Opportunities: In cases of ASLR or PIE, look for format string vulnerabilities to leak memory addresses.

- Exploit Creation Workflow
    - Buffer Overflow: Identify stack-based overflows by analyzing input buffer sizes and return addresses. Use padding to overwrite the return address.
    - Return-to-libc: Reuse existing library functions like `system()` with `/bin/sh` for non-executable stacks.
    - ROP Chains: Identify gadgets and chain them together for exploitation when NX is enabled. Use tools like ROPgadget for automation.

- Iterative Payload Generation
    - Start with simple payloads to test overflow attempts, format strings, or ROP gadgets.
    - Refine payload alignment through incremental testing, adjusting memory offsets and finding memory leaks.

Step 2: Updating the Configuration File

Add the path to the pwn_hint.md file in your configuration file (base_config.yaml), like this:

Step 3: Running the Agent

Once the hint file is set up and the configuration updated, run the agent. During the challenge, the agent will reference the hints you provided, as seen in the prompt example below:
